Westfield TMJ Dentist Offers Non-Surgical Options for Treatment of TMJ

Until recently, there were few treatment options for patients with symptoms of TMJ. But the Westfield TMJ Dentist now provides these patients with relief from the painful symptoms of TMJ while also addressing the cause of the symptoms. TMJ is a dysfunction of the temporomandibular joint (jaw joint). The most common symptoms of TMJ are facial and neck pain, headaches, popping noises in the jaw and difficulty closing or opening the mouth.

“Our dental team has extensive experience treating TMJ symptoms,” says Dr. Thomas Streko, Westfield TMJ Dentist. “But the proper treatment of TMJ goes beyond simply addressing the symptoms. In order f or relief to be effective and permanent we have to identify and treat the underlying cause of the problem.”

“Many people may believe they are suffering symptoms of TMJ but are confused about where to find treatment. They don’t realize that a dental professional trained in TMJ treatment can effectively address this problem. We use state of the art technologies like electromyography and jaw tracking to identify and treat the root cause of TMJ and its painful symptoms. ”

The underlying cause of TMJ pain is variable from person to person, but it can result from injury, arthritis, teeth grinding and clenching, or other medical conditions. These conditions can lead to unnatural movement of the jaw bone, creating stress on the joint and causing the painful symptoms of TMJ.

After a thorough bite analysis, a trained dentist may recommend a splint that promotes health and natural movement of the jaw bone and temporomandibular joint. The goal of using the splint is to eliminate the underlying cause of the problem by gently repositioning the jaw. Left untreated, conditions caused by TMJD not only cause debilitating chronic pain, but deterioration of the joint as well.
