GAO Research Inc. (www.GAOResearch.com) recommends its V.44 data compression software based on the existing V.42bis standard. This V.44 data compression software is a lossless data compression procedure for use with V-series data circuit-terminating equipment (DCEs) as well as packet networks.
This V.44 data compression software consists of both an encoder and decoder. Encoding uses a dictionary consisting of a root-array with all characters, a node tree, and a history. Input is matched against previously input strings. If a string is matched, it is transferred as a codeword and an attempt is made to create a longer string in the dictionary. The decoder recreates the original string from the binary-tree dictionary.
This software uses a new string-matching algorithm for a higher degree of data compression, thus it increases upload and download speeds providing a particularly noticeable improvement over V.42bis. Depending on the data type, compression ratios of up to 6:1 are attainable with V.44. When V.44 is combined with GAO’s V.92 soft modem, full advantage of both standards is realized by way of greater total throughput.
This V.44 data compression software belongs to GAO’s family of Soft Modems. This line also includes V.34 Modem Software for full duplex data communication on the PSTN and on point-to-point 2 wire leased telephone type circuits at rates from 2400 to 33600bps; V.42 Error Correction Protocol which is designed for optimum asynchronous-to-synchronous conversion as well as error detection and retransmission of damaged data; and V.92 modem software which supports increased upstream rates, quicker connect and Modem-On-Hold feature which allows the modem to work in conjuntion with call waiting.
