With the children grown up and a successful property development under her belt, Gilly Brown was looking for a new challenge. As usual in times of uncertainty she headed into her garden – a place to potter, grow and think. But it wasn’t until a subsequent visit to the Chelsea Flower Show that an idea started to blossom in Gilly’s mind.
Having purchased a pair of fuchsia gardening gloves which fitted perfectly, and inspired by the vibrancy of her garden, Gilly began sourcing a mix of bright, colourful and stylish products which would appeal to the lady gardener. Enlisting the help and support of her family, Gilly launched Garden Divas, an online boutique selling the colourful garden gloves along with patterned tools and assorted garden themed accessories in June 2007, generating a co-ordinated but fun look for any woman who loves her garden. Garden Divas bright, quirky appeal is perfect for ladies who are not experienced horticulturists but who get enormous pleasure from pottering amongst the blooms or tending to their vegetables. The personal service offered by Gilly and her daughter, Katie, combined with the co-ordinated gardening gifts and goodies has captured the imagination of many women, including celebrity gardener Kim Wilde.
Signature items from the range are the beautifully packaged punk pink boxes Garden Divas Handy Gift Box and Let’s Get Gardening Gift Box containing items to encourage the weekend gardener. Alternatively customers can browse the site and have their chosen selection of items personally gift wrapped or boxed. And after all that hard work of shopping or gardening, Garden Divas offers a range of pamper products to help the weary woman relax and unwind. Gilly has always been a keen vegetable grower and has fond memories of the family ritual of digging then eating the first root of potatoes, ably helped by her young son and his Grandma. Gardening is great way to spend time with the family and Gilly is keen to inspire mums to get grubby in the garden with their children, whether it’s in the vegetable patch or planting pots. And of course, the children will need their own Mini Divas little gardening tools. Garden Divas continues to flower from a passion for the outdoors and with careful tending will continue to bring pleasure to many and encourage more women to just get out there and get gardening. www.gardendivas.co.uk
